Why Confirmation of Payee matters more than ever.

At allpay, we don’t just help organisations make payments – we help them make payments safer. With fraud on the rise across the UK, the role of Confirmation of Payee (CoP) has never been more important.

Understanding APP fraud

Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud is continuing to grow year on year, with losses in the UK reaching £257.5 million in the first half of 2025, a 12% increase compared with the same period in 2024. Criminals are increasingly using sophisticated tactics to trick individuals and organisations into sending money to fraudulent accounts.

What is Confirmation of Payee?

Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is a UK name-checking service designed to prevent fraud and misdirected payments. When someone sets up a bank transfer, CoP checks whether the name entered matches the name held by the recipient’s bank. If the details do not match, the payer receives a warning before proceeding.

The service was mandated to reduce the volume of APP fraud, giving payers more confidence when sending money and reducing the risk of funds being unintentionally or deliberately misdirected.

How allpay utilises CoP

At allpay, CoP is already an established part of our security measures across our key service Prepaid, with a similar technology implemented in our Direct Debit service.

CoP is actively used within our Prepaid solution to verify recipient details when setting up a bank transfer. This helps protect cardholders – particularly those who may be more vulnerable to scams – by ensuring payments are routed safely and accurately.

Direct Debits have Payer Name Verification (PNV) in place during the setup process to confirm payer details, reducing the risk of incorrect Direct Debit setup’s or failed Direct Debits.

Why CoP matters to your organisation

  • Protects both your organisation and your customers from rising APP fraud.
  • Reduces operational burden, including payment investigations.
  • Improves customer trust by providing reassurance that payment details are correct.
  • Supports regulatory expectations, with CoP now widely implemented across the UK payment ecosystem.

Fraud prevention is a shared responsibility – and with fraud continuing to rise, taking proactive steps to safeguard payments is more important than ever.

CoP plays a crucial role in preventing fraud and ensuring payment accuracy. At allpay, we have embedded CoP into our payment solutions to support organisations and protect their customers at every step.
